Steve is an amazing leader and someone that truly cares about the mission of the Board and the personal fulfillment and well-being of those that work for him. He also has a vast understanding of veteran's law and truly takes the time to assist in the development of the attorneys that work for him. One of the truest testaments to how much he cares for his attorneys is how many of his former attorneys are currently VLJs. He is easily the most compassionate, knowledgeable and understanding VLJ or leader I have had the pleasure of working with.

Steve Reiss is likely the most supportive boss I have ever had. He cares deeply about people. He could not be further from “Lazy, Unorganized, Unprepared.” Rather, he exhaustively pre-screens his hearing cases, which makes it VERY easy for attorneys to write decisions for him. He cares deeply about Veterans’ compensation law and works tirelessly to teach all of its many nuances to attorneys. He supports his attorneys, in that several current SSC and judges have written under him. He could be the poster child for servant leadership, psychological safety, engaged, and supportive. I am a better human being and attorney for having written for Steve Reiss.

Steve Reiss is a lazy VLJ who got promoted because he was a ceaseless self-promoter and boot licker for Board management. He has little ability to get across any points in his written work or signed decisions. He also continues to promote himself even when it's clear that his time for promotion has passed. You won't learn anything from Steve but he'll probably sign just about anything you write for him unless it deviates from some management policy. And then Steve will bring the hammer down so he can show he's a good employee to Board management.
